Enkele weken voor de verkiezingen heeft Washington dringend een nieuwe presidentskandidaat nodig, maar wel èèn die als verleizer uit de bus komt. Mays Gilliam ( Chris Rock), een onbekende plaatselijke politicus uit een achterstandswijk in Washington, lijkt de aangewezen stroman te zijn. Mays is vast van plan met volle teugen van deze verkiezingscampagne te genieten en haalt zijn broer Mitch ( Bernie Mac), een keiharde borgsteller, binnen als zijn tweede kandidaat. Hun campagne wordt èèn groot feest, Gilliam wint steeds meer stemmen en is hard op weg geschiedenis te schrijven.
