December 1944. De Amerikaanse mijnenveger Caine is in de Stille Oceaan in een tornado terechtgekomen en verkeert in grote moeilijkheden. Teneinde te ontkomen stevent het schip zuidwaarts. In de ogen van luitenant-ter-zee Stephen Maryk is de commandant Queeg geestesziek en dus onbekwaam om het schip te redden. De luitenant neemt het commando over en moet na de oorlog terechtstaan voor de krijgsraad, die hem van muiterij beschuldigt. In het proces voor de krijgsraad worden de gebeurtenissen op de Caine, aan de hand van verschillende getuigenissen gereconstrueerd.
